Hemp is a cultivated plant and agricultural crop whose use can be traced back as far as 8,000 years. It is thus the oldest cultivated plant in the world. All parts of the hemp plant can be used as food. It offers a high nutritional value, sufficient calories and a relatively high amount of protein for a plant. For a long time, hemp was also very popular as a construction material. It was a commonly used building material well into the Middle Ages, especially for roofing and insulation. Today, it has come back into use, primarily because of its good insulating properties. Hemp has always played a major role in medicine. For centuries, its intoxicating properties were also a reason why it was cultivated both extensively and intensively.
Through targeted cultivation, hemp varieties have been successfully produced that now contain practically no intoxicating THC. This has made the cultivation of so-called "industrial hemp" legal. It is used mainly as animal feed or in the construction industry. CBD was first synthesised in 1963.
